About KateWorking on the Tempest

Kate has worked in the art field for the past 25 years as a calligrapher, graphic artist, painter, ceramic artist, sculptor and art educator. Over the past decade Kate has been creating art from natural and found objects. She is inspired by nature’s variety of forms. Kate is currently an elementary art teacher in the Dallas area.

Her work consists of multiple mediums, especially wood and clay, and is dependent only upon what appeals to her; a piece of driftwood may catch her eye, or a twisted piece of metal inspires her. Kate feels an emotional connection with the objects she finds and works with them to reveal the sculpture within them. Kate fell under nature’s spell while living in the pristine Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The mountains became, for her a place of refuge and inspiration. She is constantly on the lookout for new objects to transform. Kate explains, “When I am out exploring and discover a particularly interesting item, I walk by it once on my hike. If I still notice the piece when I return, I know it wants to go home with me. I am fascinated by the creative process of making art, by carving wood or forming clay.”

Kate is a regular contributor to the Dallas Empty Bowls Project, which benefits the North Texas Food Bank. She organized the Richardson Art teachers’ support of the project, has conducted workshops for local and state art teacher associations on making bowls and other art subjects.

Kate has shown her work at locations throughout the Dallas Area, including the Bath House Cultural Center, the Eisemann Center and the State Fair of Texas and other venues. She has been featured in Dallas Arts Revue.
